The forest was calm and silent, the moon slightly illuminated everything with its light. Some deers came out, unaware of the threat that impended on them. Hidden in the thick vegetation there was a slender dragoness named Hedenia, purple and black-colored, which was wearing a long chain as a necklace. Her jewel, and her weapon. The big reptile watched her preys for a while, choosing the best moment and the best way to attack and get her dinner. Camouflaged in the night and totally moveless, she didn't get spotted by the herbivores, which started looking around suspiciously. It was very improbable that they saw Hedenia, spotting her at night was nearly impossible. All of a sudden, the pack of deers got allarmed and all of them fled, running in any direction. Hedenia couldn't understand why they did that, until she heard a loud sound of flapping wings. Hedenia stayed moveless as she saw a big, green and black-colored dragon, which landed right were the deers were. The dragon was bigger than her by at least four meters, and much more robust. Judging by his expression, the dragon was looking for something, or someone. The newcomer soon wasn't alone anymore. One by one, five big dragons, slightly smaller than him, landed beside the big dragon. It wasn't an aggressive attitude, they came closer to protect him. The biggest dragon sniffed the air, then he looked at his companions, "Find her and bring her to me" he growled. A chill went down Hedenia's spine. They were looking for her.
The dragoness backed away slowly, camouflaging in the darkness. One of the dragons noticed a movement in the bushes and looked towards Hedenia; she stopped and stayed moveless, holding her breath, but as the dragon approached, she couldn't do anything by showing up. She jumped out of the bushes and growled, "What do you want from me?" she snorted, looking at the leader of the group. The latter looked into her eyes, "You've entered my territory and you tried to steal my preys, what do you think we want from you?" his tone was sour and not reassuring. Hedenia gnashed her teeth, "I'm not going to fight with you. Leave me alone and I'll go away, so that no one will get hurt" she talked in a calm, resolute way. The biggest dragon gestured to the others not to move and walked towards the dragoness, "Maybe the situation is not clear. We're not giving you a chance of choosing either to fight or not" he smirked, "Unsheathe your claws and let's see how long you'll resist!" the dragon tried to bite her neck, but Hedenia dodged the attack with a graceful backflip. "I repeat that I'm not going to fight. You could get severely hurt" Hedenia warned them again, "What a cockiness.." the leader grinned, then he charged at the dragoness. Hedenia didn't even need to move her paws from where they were; as the dragon approached and tried to bite her, she just had to move her neck on her right in order to avoid the attack. Taking advantage of the missed attack of her opponent, she counterattacked by grabbing his neck with her jaws and twisting it. The dragon was forced to lay down on the ground, and Hedenia had time to get away from him. Unnoticed, a big red and black-colored dragon was watching the scene from the deep of the forest, growling.
The dragon got up quickly and snarled; "You.. stupid bitch.. How did you dare.." he looked into her eyes, full of rage. Hedenia grabbed the chain she was wearing with a paw, and she untied it with a single tug, brandishing it like a whip. "Now you've pissed me off. I just wanted to find some food in peace, and now you're trying to kill me. I'm going to pay you with your own coin" Hedenia let out a loud roar. One of the enemy dragons ran towards her with no warning, opening his jaws wide and preparing to bite the dragoness' jugular vein. Hedenia smirked and swung her chain, throwing it against her aggressor and wrapping it around his neck. The dragon's attempts to break free were useless, and Hedenia pulled the chain retracting it and strangling the enemy to death. The dead body fell on the ground loudly, as Hedenia grabbed her chain back in her paws. "So.. Do you still want to fight?" she dared them, "You move pretty good, I have to admit that.." the leader of the group congratulated in a sour tone, "But you're forgetting the most important factor.." he smirked. Hedenia looked around, and the rest of the group had disappeared. Before she could move, the dragoness was attacked from behind by one of the dragons, which slashed at her side with a claw. Immediately after the attack, the whole group came back in position, in front of her. Hedenia growled in pain and fell on her knees, the slash made a big, deep cut which crossed her right side from the base of her neck to the base of her tail, bleeding frighteningly. "We are five, and you are alone. You have no hope to win" the leader snorted, as Hedenia collapsed on the ground.
The mysterious dragon who was watching the scene was named Kurome, but everyone knew him as the king of the forest. Armored and covered in scars, he was a scary creature that anyone restrained from provoking. Kurome watched the whole fight, wondering if he had to intervene or not. Usually, he didn't interfere with fights that didn't involve him, but seeing a dragoness fight against six dragons bigger than her was unacceptable for him. The red dragon walked through the vegetation, announcing his position to the enemy. The group turned in his direction, and so did Hedenia. Kurome reached the open space where the fight was happening and placed himself between Hedenia and the group, growling in a ferocious way. Hedenia stared at him for a few seconds. She recognized that red dragon, and she knew that no one came out alive from a fight with him. Despite she didn't know Kurome's intentions, Hedenia looked at him with a weak smile. He was there, between her and the enemy. Was he protecting her? His size, the way he hid Hedenia from the dragons' sight, and the total absence of fear in his eyes; all of those factors made Hedenia feel protected and safe. The leader of the group couldn't help but feel scared of Kurome; he perfectly knew who that dragon was, and how dangerous he could be. But he couldn't show any fear. "It doesn't matter who you are, or how strong you are, you're outnumbered!" the leader shouted. Two of the rival dragons roared and charged at Kurome at the same time, unsheathing their claws. The red dragon didn't move a finger until the two enemies were in his range. At that point, he grabbed the first one by the neck with a fast movement, and broke it like a twig. Kurome quickly turned around and grabbed the other aggressor's head with his left paw. The dragon uselessly tried to break free, before Kurome grabbed his lower jaw with the left paw. He ripped his mandible off with a single tug.
Hedenia watched the scene amazedly; that red dragon managed to kill two dragons as big as him in just a few seconds. The leader of the group and the remaining two companions looked at him in horror. Kurome dropped the mutilated corpse of his enemy and looked into the leader's eyes, "Now tell me. Do you define yourself a dragon? Attacking a dragoness smaller than yourself.. Six against one.. Do you dare define yourself a dragon!?" Kurome shouted. Hedenia smiled, he was actually protecting her. "It's named teamwork" the leader snorted. "No, it's named cowardice. And I don't like cowards. I suggest you all to move your asses and go away from here, before you suffer the same fate of your companions" Kurome growled. The leader of the group gulped, he had no choice; he had to flee. He gestured to the other dragons to follow him and flapped his wings, taking off. He looked at Kurome once again, before flying away followed by his companions. Kurome turned around and approached to Hedenia, looking at her wound. The dragoness smiled, "You.. You save-" "Shut up. In your condition, the worst thing you can do is wasting your oxygen by talking. Take deep breaths and be quiet" Kurome interrupted her. Hedenia nodded and took a long breath, managing to wear her chain again. She was really grateful to Kurome, but that wasn't the right moment to show him her gratitude. Kurome gently grabbed her and lifted her onto his back, securing her by folding his wings around her. The red dragon started walking without saying anything else. Hedenia smiled widely and laid her head onto Kurome's neck, blushing and letting herself get carried away by her savior. She seemed to have forgotten about the strong pain that the wound was causing her. She didn't know what would have happened, if she would have survived or not. In that moment, she didn't care at all.
Kurome walked under the moon silently, then he spoke just once at half of the way, "My name is Kurome, you'll tell me yours as soon as we arrive to my den". Hedenia smiled, "That name fits him.." she thought to herself, looking at the black, empty eyes of the red dragon. She didn't say a word, as she just followed Kurome's suggestion and breathed deeply. A few minutes later, the two reached a big cave and walked inside; there were bloodstains scattered everywhere, as well as bones belonging to many deceased creatures. Anyone would have been scared to be taken into a place where a lot of creatures have been killed, by the same creature that murdered them. Anyone, but not Hedenia. She completely trusted Kurome, and the thought that he wanted to kill her didn't even touch her mind. Kurome walked deeper into the cave, until he found a big pile of straw, which he used to sleep on. Kneeling down before it, Kurome gently placed Hedenia onto the soft straw bed. Her wound was exposed and and well visible; the cut wasn't infected, and thanks to the absence of abrupt movements during the trip, it didn't get wider nor deeper. "I can see they beated you up very well, but at least you've defended yourself and you killed one of them, that's not little thing. Anyone would have fled in a similar situation, but you showed to me and them that you have some guts. Good job" Kurome looked at the wound, assessing its seriousness. "So... he's been watching me for the whole time, just waiting for the right moment to save me.." Hedenia thought to herself. The dragoness smiled faintly, the wound was giving her a sharp pain. She shivered, teared up and breathed heavily, but she kept smiling. It wasn't just gratitude towards Kurome, there was something else. Something that made her extremely happy to be close to him, even in a critical situation like that.

Golden Skarmony, your work is just fantastic! I read one of your stories every time I come to Deviant Art, and I find they're all REALLY well written. And bonus points for the flow of creativity! This one in particular is amazing, it's done really well, like most of your stories tend to be, and the demonstration of your characters and action shows clearly the extent of your writing.
